What instruments can I learn to make?

What can I expect from the course? What will I get out of it?
The instructors John Vergara and Tony Velez have many years experience making and repairing stringed instruments. With a passion for teaching, they will make an instrument with you from beginning to end. Depending on your ability level and experience you will be tasked with various aspects of luthiery with guided instruction. You reap the benefits of years of professional experience and mentorship saving you years of trial and error. You will also have access to tools, materials, and equipment that most people do not have.
Do I keep the instrument after the course is over?
The student doesn’t keep the instrument because the instructor typically makes 85% of the instrument. However, this instrument can be purchased for $2500 (guitar, oud), ($1500 Puerto Rican cuatro)
If I’m coming from far away, where will I stay?
The course has two options, one for Local tuition only
The second option is for commuters. If you are coming from far away and need affordable accommodations
Tuition with room and board. This option will give you a private 1 bedroom with apartment conveniently located above the workshop.
How will I get to the shop every day?
People who choose to room and board with our accommodations will have transportation to and from the workshop.
How will I arrive at Lexington, North Carolina?
Lexington is conveniently located just over 30 minutes south of Winston-Salem and under an hour from both Greensboro and Charlotte. The nearest major airport is Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO) in Greensboro, about 40 minutes away, with regular flights from major U.S. cities, including New York, Florida, and Chicago. Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), a major hub, is also just over an hour’s drive.
While there is no direct passenger train to Lexington itself, Amtrak’s “Piedmont” and “Carolinian” lines stop in Salisbury and High Point, both about 20–25 minutes from Lexington by car. A ride service or pre-arranged pickup can bring you from the station to your lodging or to Lord of the Strings if you’re coming for tuition, repairs, or instrument pickup.
Private transportation or rental car is recommended for maximum flexibility, as public transit is limited in this area. That said, once you're here, you'll enjoy the quiet charm of North Carolina's barbecue capital — and the Southern hospitality that comes with it.
Is food included in the arrangement?
Due to people’s diets and eating preferences, they should purchase their own meals.
Is it dangerous to make instruments and do woodworking?
Yes, however, you will not be tasked with dangerous operations or things you are uncomfortable with. We are dedicated to safety and there are a few guidelines to keep in mind. Hair if long must be tried back behind you or in a bun. Long sleeves shall be rolled up. No hanging jewelry should be worn. Safety goggles are a MUST. Hearing protection and respirators will be used for particular processes. All safety P.P.E. (personal protection equipment) will be provided.
What are the age requirements for the course?
The youngest age accepted is 15, however they will need a parental consent form submitted as well as proof of insurance. The old age limit is more about cognitive function as there is no limit for this.
Am I allowed to record videos and take photographs?
Yes, recording is allowed with the instructor’s permission however it is not to be uploaded for public viewing.
What are the local attractions and stores in Lexington, North Carolina?
Lexington is best known as the Barbecue Capital of the World, drawing visitors each year for its famous Lexington-style BBQ, the Barbecue Festival, and a rich tradition of Southern food. The historic Main Street district features antique shops, cafes, galleries, and locally owned stores, many set in charming, restored buildings.
For outdoor lovers, Uwharrie National Forest is a short drive away, offering hiking, camping, and boating. Nearby High Rock Lake is popular for fishing and watersports. There are also scenic walking trails and parks right in town, such as Finch Park and Birkhead Wilderness Trail.
Lexington is home to Childress Vineyards, one of North Carolina’s most renowned wineries, offering tastings, tours, and dining in a Tuscan-style setting.
For everyday needs, there are several supermarkets including Food Lion, Walmart Supercenter, and Ingles Market. Lexington also has a natural food co-op and various local farm stands, especially during the growing season.
